Office Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the science of adapting the job and/or the equipment and the human to each other for optimal safety and productivity.

A workplace that has swivel chairs with adjustable positions, stable, roomy desks etc will provide a working environment that is comfortable and safe.

Furniture and equipment should be suitably positioned and conform to the relevant Health and Safety at Work (HASAW) legislation.

There should be:
  • Measures taken to minimise RSI (e.g. check the position of seats and desks, provide wrist rests, and taking regular breaks)
  • Provision of adequate lighting and ventilation
  • VDU’S appropriately positioned with screens free from flicker and interference and images free from glare
  • Provision of blinds to minimise direct sunlight
  • Sufficient legroom and desk space to allow you to move around
  • Suitable desktop space
  • A suitable adjustable chair to provide safe and comfortable posture for the user
